Dr. Stuart Smyth is a Professor in the Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics and holds the Industry-funded Research Chair in Agri-Food Innovation at the University of Saskatchewan. Dr. Smyth’s research focuses on innovation and agriculture and the resulting impacts.
He is part of a group of academics at the U of S which will receive $37 million over the ‘Designing Plants for Global Food Security’ project, funded by the Canada First Research Excellence Fund. This research involves plant genotyping and phenotyping. Dr. Smyth’s research will examine how technologies are shared and accepted by society.
Most recent publications in 2015 include: co-author with Peter Phillips (U Sask) of the Incomplete coexistence systems and international food trade impacts, published in Res and co-author with William A. Kerr (U Sask) and Peter Phillips (U Sask) of The Unintended Consequences of Technological Change: Winners and Losers from GM Technologies and the Policy Response in the Organic Food Market, published by Sustainability, and co-author with Peter Phillips (U Sask) and William A. Kerr (U Sask) of Food Security and the Evaluation of Risk, published in Global Food Security. In addition to Smyth’s publication of The Food Industry’s Conundrum About GM Labeling in Canadian Food Insights.
Recent publications in 2014 include: co-editor with Peter Phillips (U Sask) and David Castle (U Victoria) of the Handbook Agriculture, Biotechnology and Development, a 51 chapter book published by Edward Elgar and co-editor with Jose Falck-Zepeda (IFPRI) and Karinne Ludlow (Monash U, Melbourne, Aust.) of Considerations in Biotechnology Regulation, published by Springer.
